I just got the newsletter drafted.  It should go out today.  New puzzle with contest and, of course, the first sneak peek of the book. I haven't gotten the video camera thing going yet because life has been lifish, but I want to get you guys excited, so you get a sneak peek too.  Now, the newsletter peek was a bit longer -- I want to reward people who sign up after all.  But you get a taste now, and more to follow in a couple of days.

(Note, this was cut and pasted from a typed version of the manuscript, not the final copy, so pardon any errors as being part of the risk you take for peeking.):

PROLOGUE

Atropos shivered, despite the weight of her heavy wool cloak. Her bones ached and her joints stiffened in wet weather. It made her move more slowly, which meant she would be out in the rain longer. That soured her mood. She did not want to do this, and cursed the necessity. Normally she’d let one of her other two aspects handle it. With her youth, Clotho could ignore foul weather, and while Lachesis loathed the damp, it didn’t incapacitate her. But both of them had history with the King of the Sidhe. Atropos did not trust the younger ones not to be affected by sentiment. So with faltering footsteps, supported by a cane carved of ash, she made her way through the darkened rose garden, following a path strewn with shifting shadows, until she reached a little-known servant’s door, tucked discreetly in a corner behind a trellis that bore a thick covering of ivy.
The door was unlocked, as arranged, and she stepped through into a wide, marble-floored hallway dimly lit by a few glowing crystals.
Depending on one’s perspective, it was either very late or quite early, barely three hours past midnight. Even the hardiest courtiers had gone to their beds, as had most of the servants. But Atropos knew the king was still awake and at work, and his guards with him.
The man on the door was no fool and no coward. The moment he saw Atropos he knew who, and what, she was. But he stood his ground, a mountain of ebony muscle barring the heavy oak doors with his body, weapons ready, though not actively threatening her.
            “I will see the king.”
The guard did not meet her milky gaze. Instead he stared over her left shoulder, into the middle distance, as he answered her in a voice that was completely steady, despite the muscle that twitched nervously above his right eye. “The king is not to be disturbed.”
“He will see me.” Her voice was harsh as the caw of a carrion bird, but the soldier neither flinched nor moved. He was accustomed to death, this one, having dealt it out, and seen it, more often than most. His name, she recalled, was Petros. It was certainly apt. He was solid as a rock—and just about as bright.
Petros opened his mouth to again refuse her, but was saved by the king’s command from behind the closed doors.
            “Let the crone in.”
The guard turned and opened the door for her without further comment.
After the chill dimness of the hall, the warmth and light of King Leu’s library was most welcome. Atropos moved gratefully toward the fireplace in the corner nearest the door. Though Leu was seated near the fire, he was not looking into the flames. Instead, he stared at a painting that hung on the wall nearby. To the uninformed, the painting was just that, a perfect rendering of the entry hall of a modern human apartment. Atropos knew, however, that the frame contained something more than a painting. She also knew just how much the image meant to her host.
Leu made her wait before turning to greet her. It was a deliberate slight, and it rankled, though Atropos knew better than to let that show. She had sought this meeting. She was in his castle, his place of power. And while all men must bow to the will of Fate, this was not the time or place to remind him of it. Leu was a king, and a proud man.
“Why are you here?” He spoke calmly, his eyes gleaming silver in the firelight.
“I need a boon,” she answered sourly.
His elegant, dark brows rose so high they disappeared beneath a shock of his dark hair, in the front braided tight against his skull and pulled back in a tail, the back hanging nearly to his knees. She felt a pang of memory—Clotho’s—of the silken feel of that hair beneath her fingers and sliding over her naked body. . . . The crone found herself fighting her younger aspect for control of their shared body. Closing her eyes, she clamped down tight with her will until Clotho sullenly relented.
“You seek a boon? From me?” Leu gave a slow, feral smile, his pleasure evident in the anticipatory flash of sharp, white teeth. “Have a seat,” he suggested with belated courtesy, gesturing toward the beautifully carved wooden chair across from him. “Would you like a drink?”
Atropos nodded her consent. Resting her cane against the nearby table she lowered herself onto the straight-backed chair. It was not a comfortable seat. The carvings dug painfully into her back, and whatever padding the seat had once held had been worn down to nothing. She smiled grimly, knowing that the only better seat in the room was the king’s; the others were all intended to subtly discourage everyone else from lingering.
Everything about Leu was subtle, complex, layered. He was a very physical being, Clotho and Lachesis could both attest to that, but ultimately his mind was what made him most dangerous—and the kind of High King Faerie needed. Atropos might not like the man, but she respected him, and her respect was not earned easily.
She took a glass of wine from his hand, the liquid so dark a red it was nearly purple. She didn’t worry about poison. He wasn’t the type, and she was immune to most of them anyway. Still, there was always the possibility of an accident. The man had so very many enemies.
Leu pushed aside a stack of maps and leaned back against the edge of the table, quite close to her. Taking a sip from his glass, he looked down at her and, smiling that dangerous smile, said, “Let the dickering begin.”

Today

I'm slowly recovering from the whole bronchitis kicking my butt thing, but I am in a VERY good mood.  THE EXILE is coming out in just a few days, and I am very excited.

I was able to get in touch with the USO, and they referred me to a charity that sends books to our troops.  I have committed to sending out a BUNCH of my novels that have been sitting on my shelves at home to the military.  This makes me very happy as I always want to support our troops.  Of course I also HOPE that they'll love them, and want to get all the rest.  (BWA HA HA HA).  Loyal readers are a great and glorious thing.

Everybody drive safe in the icy conditions that seem to be covering most of our country.

Audiobook cover, THE EXILE

This is the audiobook cover for The Exile.  Isn't it AWESOME!  Great job all.  I am THRILLED.

Galloping Crud

Alas, I am behind on things again.  Got a bad case of bronchitis and was flat on my back ill for a full week.  The short story collection is now being shelved until after March so that I can do the book promo stuff and get caught up.  Writing has started again, and is going well.  Edit letter for ALL YOUR WISHES is due soon.

Tomorrow I am hoping to get the newsletter out so that I can notify the winners of the contest.  The winners books will be going on Friday.  But I am not going to push myself too hard because, frankly, I'm not completely well yet and can't afford to.

BEST TO ALL.

Camera has arrived.

WOOT -- the video camera has arrived.  I now need to learn how to use it to post interviews, clips and readings here and to the website via YouTube.

Wish me good luck!

HMNNNNNNNNNNN

AND THE GOOD NEWS IS

There's actually a Wiki page for Cat Adams.  Not C.T. Adams (bummer) but HEY one of my aliases is on Wiki.  How cool is that?

Got the cover flats for THE EXILE and they are FREAKING GORGEOUS.  WOOT!  It looks even better full size.  This, of course means, that I will have them available for giveaways when I send out the next newsletter on 2/1.

When I was in Denver in December I went to the big Barnes & Noble downtown and was treated spectacularly well when I offered to sign stock.  They were sweet, efficient, and flattering.  Too, there was STOCK of my books to sign.  This is a good thing and it made me feel very good about myself and my craft.

Recently I went to a smaller city in a different state and offered to sign stock.  They were not particularly helpful and stopped just a bit short of rude. If it hadn't been for the great experience in the city I would've been pretty low about it--particularly since I'd been questioning whether or not I'm still "relevant" and have fans.

But I'm beginning to think, based on things like responses to my newsletter contests, the Wiki page, the fact that B&N in a major city had multiple copies of my books on the shelves (and some faced out), that perhaps the bad experiences (and there have been more than one) are an aberration, or perhaps a localized phenomenon.

Either way, I'm going to keep going.  But if you have a wild desire to encourage me, feel free.

Video Camera

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a video camera.  The goal is to do short video readings to link from my website to YouTube, interviews, and other stuff.  I THINK I can link them to here too.

I'm trying to do new and nifty things that you guys (the fans) might like.  Also getting ready to do some promo stuff like the tee-shirts that are mentioned in the book for giveaways.  We'll see.

ANYWAY, I'm very excited that things are getting back on track.

Best always.

BUSY -- OY

I'm VERY busy right now.  Only have a minute to stop by and thank those of you who commented, and those who have been visiting with me on Facebook.  I am glad to know I haven't completely fallen off the map.

I'm still in the process of re-designing the website.  No links are up and running yet, but I'm getting pretty pleased with the look of it.  Simple.  That's the plan.

I'll check back in a couple days and let you know that it's finished.

What if . . .

THERE’S A PARTY GOIN’ ON RIGHT HERE . . .

I had a thought the other day–what would it be like if characters from my various books and series showed up for a bash.  Who’d come?  Who’d send regrets?  Who’d talk to whom, and who’d be most likely to wind up with a lampshade on his/her head?

Silly, I know.  But I could picture it.

From the Sazi–Tony might make it–but only if Sue dragged him along.  Might be fun if he brought Carmine, Linda and Babs along.  Raphael and Catherine would surely be there, dancing carefully around the inevitable issues with Tatiana, who’d show up on Lucas’ arm decked in diamonds.  If the Monier family arrived it could get VERY interesting indeed.  I’d hope that Raven could come, but he’d probably be on the road somewhere.

From the Thrall world I’m sure Kate Reilly would make it with Tom.  So would Carlton–who I imagine would be the life of the party, towering over everyone and chowing down on hot wings.

Of course, there’d be LOTS of food, very heavy on the protein offerings.  After all, you do not want your shapeshifters getting hungry.

Music would be tricky.  What to play?   Hmmnnnn.  Some of these shapeshifters have been around a LOOONG time.  Others, not so much. Should there be dancing?  Might be fun.  Or not.

Having the Fae show up from the new reality would be interesting as well.  How would the shapeshifters deal with creatures even more exotic than they?  And what do you suppose a Doxie would smell like?

But any way you slice it, it would be unforgettable–and more than a little dangerous.  All those predators . . .   And they might not be that happy with me.  I mean, seriously, I put my characters through a LOT of crap.  Maybe it’s just as well they CAN’T come off the page and in my living room.

But it’s sure fun to imagine.

Where I'm At

Okay, I've decided to try to get back on the social media bandwagon in a limited way.  I can't do TOO much, if I do it eats away at my writing time, which there isn't enough of as is.  But I want to re-connect with fans--and frankly I feel like I've fallen down on the job about that for far too long.

Hell, sometimes I wonder if I even HAVE fans any more.  Seriously.  Sales are good (thank you).  But withouit going to conferences, or hearing back via email or social media, you lose track.

SO, I'm blogging again.  I've gotten the newsletters out.  And I will probably redesign and put back up the website.    I will FaceBook in a limited way, probably on one weekend day for a couple of hours.

We'll see if it works.

In the meantime, "HI" and "I'm back."

It's been a rough year.

January 2nd I fell, dislocated both hips, and generally screwed up from the waist down.  Finally got that healed (YAY) and broke a major molar and wound up with oral surgery.

That's healing, and I'm HOPING that we're at the end of the illness/injury train for a while.

Just turned in the page proofs for THE EXILE.  The cover for it is AWESOME--SERIOUSLY GORGEOUS.  I'll upload it if I can manage.

AWESOME isn't it?

We're having a re-release of TOUCH OF EVIL too--October.  I'm SO EXCITED.  It's awesome.  And I was very happy when I did a re-read.  It's a better book than I remembered, and I got to tighten up the one or two little things that bugged me in the previous version.

SO, if you haven't gotten a chance to read it, DO.

Again, AWESOME COVER.

I also got the map and the excerpt to the newsletter guru so it will go out today.

Now I need to go home, have some dinner, and finish the second pass on ALL YOUR WISHES, the next Celia Graves novel.

Then I can say I'm having a TRULY PRODUCTIVE day.

Best to you all.

ALAS . . . .

Complete system failure.

What is:  three words you don't want to hear about your computer.

Particularly when you have a book deadline and it's been going well.  And you have a novella you just started that was, also, going remarkably well.  And you have photos you took (although, fortunately, they were on the website, so not lost).

Didn't lose the whole book.  BUT lost one of the best fight scenes I've ever written (unless they can save the machine, which I am doubting).

Lost the start of the novella.

YES I back up.  But I haven't for a couple of days--mostly because life was being particularly lifish, of which the system crash is yet another example.

I will not be going to Fencon AGAIN this year.  I have to get caught back up on the book and I have to spend the money on a new computer. (Assuming they don't replace it since it was under warranty.  And in the meantime, I am working on my ancient behemoth that I held onto even though it doesn't run very well any more.  [More limps along, walking with a cane actually.])

But it could have been worse.  MUCH worse.  SO, I will count my blessings and move on.

Research

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was a wannabe writer desperate to get published and hungry to have the tools to do the research I needed to do to make a great product (mysteries mostly back then, some fantasy too.) There was a series of books I lusted after called the "Howdunit" series from Writer's Digest.  I didn't believe in myself enough to convince myself back then to shell out the money I couldn't afford to buy them.  But OH I wanted those babies.

WELL, I am now a professional writer, a NOVELIST.  (WOOT!!)  I still have to do lots of research.  (Lot of it is help from friends.  Some on the internet.)  But you know what.  I still read books for research.  And a panel by a friend who is a #1 NYT author reminded me of those books.

I went online.  I FOUND THEM -- WOOT WOOT WOOT.  I ordered a bunch and am SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!

I know it's geeky.  I DON'T CARE!  I will have the tools I need to look up poisons, and crime scenes and common guns.  RIGHT IN MY LIBRARY!

YAHOOO!!!!!

Monday, August 12, 2013

Wrote the following e-mail to my mom to explain why I didn't call this weekend.

First -- 100+ degree heat and the power goes out for the whole city mid-afternoon on Saturday.  Also most cell service.  I had a quarter tank of gas which is not QUITE enough to get to another city in either direction.  With no a/c and no fans it was pretty miserable.

When it was still off Sunday morning I went down to the fire station to see if they had an ETA for when it would be back up.  He had no idea.  But he did have one bar of cell service.  So I tried my phone and WOO HOO!  I could call out.  Called a friend from a city a couple of towns over and asked if she could bring me 10 bags of ice and a can of gas if I paid for it all. (Fortunately I had money.)  She was glad to help.  Good thing I called early -- by the time she got to the store she got the last of the ice.  I wasn't the only one who had the idea.

MEANWHILE since it looked like I might have to go a full day without power I decided to fix the screens on my house.  So I got out my trusty tools and step stool and went to start with the bathroom window.  I had to trim back the tree limbs first, then I set up the stool and climbed up -- only to have the stool topple over with me on it.  OW.  REALLY OW.  FORTUNATELY I wasn't seriously hurt (twisted my ankle, a couple of bruises, wounded pride), went inside and iced the ankle.  Realized I wasn't wearing my glasses.  Went BACK outside with Tonya (who'd arrived by then with the ice) to look for said glasses wearing my prescription sunglasses.

I had landed on my glasses.

Crap.

They were not destroyed, but were bent, and when I tried to straighten them -- they broke.

Tonya's husband said he thought he could fix them, so I sent them home with her to him.

Put ice in the fridge, the freezer, and around the house (and around my ankle) and things were cool enough to let me sleep.  (I really needed that nap.)

Around 4:30 the power came back on.  Called Tonya.  Micah had fixed the glasses.  Checked the fridge.  Stuff in the fridge was pretty much ruined.  1/3 of the meat in the freezer thawed.  The rest stayed frozen solid.  If I cook it today I should be okay.

Went and filled up the vehicle with gas and went to get my glasses from Tonya so I'd be able to wear them at work.  (Working in sunglasses did not seem like a great idea.) Then went to the grocery store in the next town where they hadn't lost power to get all the groceries that had been ruined.

I finally got home late last night and fell into bed.

I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but . . .

I AM SO FREAKING GLAD THAT WEEKEND IS OVER!!

I'm fine.  (Sore, stiff, frustrated and aggravated at having spent a LOT of money I hadn't planned on, but) FINE.

BACK FROM VACATION

BACK FROM VACATION

It was a wonderful trip with my friend Pam.  Went to Treasure Island, Florida where it was MUCH cooler than where I'm currently living.  It rained every day, but between showers I spent time shopping, on the beach, and eating at wonderful restaurants.  I also took lots of pictures, met with my (brilliant) agent to discuss my career, and did research that will appear in a future Celia Graves book that I am now writing.  I am rested, refreshed, and ready to rock.

AWESOME.

This is a shot of Lucienne and I.  Typical for me, my hair is everywhere!  But HEY, note the pirate ship! lol

STUFF AND NONSENSE

1 - Turned in the Fae book.  Hope it is OK.  Fear it is terrible.  Will wait for edits and find out.
2 - Am taking a couple of days off before start the next Celia book during which I will clean house and visit me mum.
3 - Bought 2 copies (one for me, one for my son) of the published version of Neil Gaiman's MAKE GOOD ART speech.  It is SO worth it.
4 - Wrote an e-mail to Charlaine Harris because she deserves better treatment than she is getting. (IN MY NOT SO HUMBLE OPINION).
5 - Reading new stuff.  It's pretty good.
6 - Watched Iron Man 3 and loved it.

AND NOW I'M OFF AND RUNNING.

Guten Morgen

Okay, priority for today.  Go online and find out how to block all comments here since I am very nearly only getting disgusting spam.  (As opposed to actual comments or entertaining spam.)

Another priority is to work on the edits the beta readers have produced.

BUT GOOD NEWS!

So far they all like it!  WOOT!

I mostly rested this weekend.  Did a little housework, volunteered a little bit at the library, but mostly rested. I needed it.

Volunteering at the library was fun!  I surprised myself.

My mom was a school librarian (she traveled from grade school to grade school in the district working in the various libraries.)  My aunt was the AV librarian at the middle school library.  I grew up in libraries and love them.  And, to this day, if I see a set of encyclopedias (although written encyclopedias are practically an extinct breed thanks to the internet) I have to put them in order.  HAVE to.  It's a compulsion.

I am volunteering at the local library to get experience.  Although, oddly, all my childhood experience came back to me and I was able to walk right back into it.  I am getting experience because I am hoping to get a day job with one of the Denver area library systems when I move back. It is a good job, and a job I could love.  And while the plan may not work--it's a good plan, and it makes me happy.

Then again, books make me happy.  Go figure.

Think I'm a writer much?

LOL

It is the weekend.

It is the weekend.  I have a million things to do.  I wrote yesterday -- until I was just producing crap and not actually creating anything.  I will look tomorrow to see if I can fix what I may have broken by trying to push to hard and too fast.

The things to do around the house are not going anywhere.  I am pooped.  So I am resting on the Sabbath and figuring that it'll get done somehow, sometime.

Later.

Thinking through sludge

Woke up in the middle of the night so congested I could barely breathe, so I took a decongestant.  Had a hard time sleeping after, and now I feel like I'm thinking through sludge.  Yes, I took the non-drowsy stuff (I have to go to the day job later.)  But I still feel like crap. I take for granted being clear headed.

Mom is doing better.  She's moved from the hospital to rehab.  Hopefully she won't have to be in there too long and can come home soon.  I'll probably try to go out for a visit soon after she gets home in case she needs some help--I'll have to arrange it with my sister so we take turns.  Tim (my brother) has been doing a wonderful job, but I think that once she's out of daily care he might be able to use (a) some help; and (b) the rest.

Writing is going slowly.  (See above paragraph about sludge and crazy crisis with Mom).  But it is going well, and I am glad.  Got all the stuff for the Intergalactic Bar and Grille in the mail, and have picked out the prizes, so that is coming along nicely too.  Sorry I won't be able to make RT.  But there you go.  Life is sometimes like that.

Have to go to the store, so I'll sign off.

Best.

AHA!!

Okay, spent a little time removing obscene and advertising comments.  It took a bit to learn it--but so worth it.  :)

OH YEAH, the individual website is:  http://www.CTAdamsauthor.com  Go, look, enjoy.

It may be a few days between posts.  Stuff is going on in my personal life.  My mom is in the hospital.  (Prayers appreciated.)

Aiming fior the future.

I was talking to a friend the other evening.  We were talking about past mistakes.  I told him one of the things I believe -- that you should only look back long enough to learn the lesson.  Otherwise, looking back at mistakes just makes you bitter.  It's done.  It's over.  You can't change it.  Learn from it and move on.

The future may not be promised.  We only KNOW we have the present.  Still, best to enjoy the present and USE the time to aim at the future you want.  You may not make it, but you have a better chance than if you didn't take aim and take the present actions to get you there.

Life is about change.  Right now the book industry is in a state of flux.  There are huge opportunities, and HUGE pitfalls for the unwary.  Fair enough.  I think it's always been that way--but there are different traps (Still think it is wise to go to Predators and Editors if you're starting out.)

I went to the TED site the other day (I go frequently.  I'm trying to feed my mind.).  There was a short speech on the hidden opportunities/benefits trauma can bring to your life.  I've had me some trauma.  I can say that, if you let it, it can teach you things about yourself and others that will stick with you for a lifetime.

Among the things it taught me -- what was important.  When I was stuck in bed, THE important thing to me was connecting with my son, really talking to him, passing on the lessons and values I've learned, getting to know each other in a way that wasn't as superficial as it had been because I was having to work too damned hard just to survive and pay the bills.  That period changed our relationship from one that had been difficult, to a strong, positive one that I value more deeply than I can say.

Another -- laughter matters.  A lot.  If you can laugh, the problems suddenly seem more manageable.  They might not actually BE more manageable, but you feel better, so you can deal with them, and the consequences, fall out and crap. If you can laugh with someone, you bond and you're more likely to have an ally to attack the problems with you.  Besides, it just feels good.  It was in one of those periods that my son and I came up with our family "motto."

Shit happens.  Bring a shovel.

Not elegant, but it works.

I have made past mistakes.  Some of them small.  Some were huge.  But they're the past.  I've learned.  I'm aiming at the future I want.  It's not going to be an easy path.  I know that.  But it's the future I want, so I'm taking the actions that I think will get me there.  If I've got the wrong "map" I'll check coordinates and aim again.  And I will try to enjoy the process. Because while aiming at the future is important--just in case I have one; enjoying the present and making the most of it is more so--just in case I don't.

Be well, be happy.

Monday, March 18, 2013

Alas, another weekend ends.

Okay, this weekend was a mixed bag -- but overall positive.  I didn't get everything done I wanted (I never do).  But I did accomplish a few things.  No writing though.  (BAD CIE!)  Broke my good glasses.  Put them back together, but didn't get them straight or something, because the focus was off.  Am using the back-up pair, which aren't as good and refuse to stay up where they belong.  UGH.

Did get the first individual newsletter out, a blog post done, photos printed for my mom and son out of the batch of publicity shots by Jamie Flanders (excellent -- they actually look like me, but on a GOOD day.  This is unusual when I get pictures taken.)  I changed the profile picture on Facebook, did a bit of housework and laundry, baked cookies, muffins and brownies.  (I bake to relax.  Froze them so that I wouldn't wind up eating too many).  Updated my individual website, applied for a bunch of jobs in the Denver metro area, and generally tried to accomplish things.

I am very sorry I won't get to go to RT.  Life has intervened.  It is always a very good time.  Weird that last year I had to cancel because my father was dying.  It doesn't seem like it could have been nearly a year already, but it has.  Funny that the days are slow but the months are flying by.

All right, enough rambling.  I have to get back to writing actual books.  Have fun folks!

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S, COVER ART, & STUFF

Hi Guys!

St. Patrick's Day is tomorrow.  I celebrated today by planting myself some shamrocks!  One of my friends had both white and purple ones.  Since I'd never seen them with purple flowers before I begged a bit from her.  They'll look lovely in the front yard once they recover from being transplanted.

Isn't the cover above gorgeous!  It's for the next Blood Singer book.  I'm THRILLED with it!  Very exciting stuff.

Also, I am now officially going to start dealing with individual newsletters and publicizing the individual website.  Kind of scary, but exciting too.

RT is coming up soon.  I will not be able to attend, but Cathy will be there!  We're taking part in the INTERGALACTIC BAR AND GRILLE.  It is a seriously fun party with lots of blinky stuff, glow in the dark stuff, prizes, and lots of fun.  I'm hoping you'll all go there and have a blast--say hi to everyone for me.  I'm going to ask you all to send me pictures of the party at catadamsfans@gmail.com so that I'll see what I'm missing.

I'm a bit behind on sending out prizes. (Yeah, yeah, I know you're SHOCKED, SHOCKED I say.)  But they're getting packed today and going out Monday.  So hang in there, and I really do apologize for the delay.

I am working on polishing up the first Fae novel THE EXILE for review by the beta readers.  I was going to get it to them sooner, but edits came in for Dance and I ran out of time.  SO, now I'm getting on track.

OH BTW -- if you get the chance GO TO MYSTIC MERCHANT and buy something.  My friend Pat Elrod makes absolutely awesome stuff, and she has had some recent, unexpected vet bills for her cherished pet (the dog that previously belonged to Pat's deceased sister).  So see if you can help.  I think she's also doing something at indigogo.  goto:  www.vampwriter.com

Let's see.  What I'm reading at the moment:

I'm doing a re-read of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.  Just finished Small Favor which is one of my favorites.  I immediately went to the short story which comes after The Warrior from Mean Streets so that I could re-read the scene where Uriel talks to Harry in the church balcony.  Beautiful work.  Read it if you get the chance.

Okay--off to do the first official newsletter and update the website.  YIKES.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY FOLKS!!

On Being Enough

I read Neil Gaiman's blog.  I have been told that blogs are passe.  Perhaps they are.  If so, I am very sorry.  Because I find out things I need to know when people are honest in their posts--things that have nothing to do directly with me, but which have EVERYTHING to do with what I need to know.

One of my goals was to be in an anthology with Neil Gaiman.  I approached him about it because, at that time, we had the same agent.  Also because, frankly, if you don't ask, the other person can't say yes.  (Yes, they can't say no either, and there's a real danger of that, but I try to think positively about these things.  You see, I believe that if you don't try, you have already failed.  Mainly because you've robbed yourself of any opportunity of success.)

I bungled the request badly.  I came off like a deranged fan.  It is one of the risks of being a (hopefully not deranged--or at least not in that way) fan, and exceptionally socially inept.  Fortunately for me a happy circumstance, totally unplanned, happened and I ENDED UP IN AN ANTHOLOGY WITH NEIL GAIMAN.  The blasted thing didn't sell for squat, but it's beautiful, and it's hardback, and I keep it to remind me that I write because I write and not everything is about the money.

ANYWAY, I digress (I do that a lot. Thank my editor that you don't have to suffer through more of it in the books).  I was reading Neil Gaiman's blog and I saw where he posted Amanda Palmer's TED speech.  It was wonderful.  She is as brilliant as he is (which is saying something people) and brave and daring and many, many other good things, and I am happy that they found each other even though I don't know either of them personally (and probably never will thanks to having seriously bungled my above request so as to sound deranged in a really-seriously-not-good way.)  But I digress again.

The speech made me think--which most good TED items do.  It also almost made me cry. Why?

Because it unmasked the big fear.  The one I suppose most artists have--but that I have in spades.  It has a name.  It is called:

                                             NOT     GOOD   ENOUGH

It is the belief that whatever I have to offer isn't worthy, and that I'm not worthy to offer it, that I'm being horribly presumptuous to think that I can do this, that people will want to pay their hard earned money to visit with my imaginary friends and hear what I/they have to say. The fear is always there.  It is bad enough that the only way I was able to launch my career was by partnering with someone who didn't have it.  I've grown, and learned, and am now standing on my own.  But I will never cease being grateful for Cathy's standing up and saying "It's good.  Why don't I send it out for you?"  And doing it.

I was on Amazon the other day, trying to figure out if the new book was selling.  I shouldn't have gone.  I know better.  Yes, the book is selling.  But they have reviews.  And while some of the reviews are good, there are always those people who write nasty, scathing comments, comments that rip and scar.

It was the luck of the draw that the negative reviews were on top.  The ranking showed that the book isn't all that hated.  But the worst review was right there under the ranking and it was brutal.

THE ELDRITCH CONSPIRACY is a book well into an established series.  It is a pivot point.  Things are changing in the character's life.  But it comes long enough after the previous book that things have happened in the interim.  Important things emotionally--things that are discussed in flashback, but that are not an immediate part of the current adventure.  The important things are not online in real time because they had nothing to do with the immediate adventure. Writing it this way was a risk. Because the character's love life is important.  But the fact is, that the series is not a romance series.  There is romance in it.  But it is not the focus of the series.

I received a seriously nasty e-mail because of it.  A nasty e-mail that didn't have its facts completely straight, but was heartfelt, and from a reader who seriously cared about the characters and was furious with how they'd been handled.  I lost a reader.  And I got to read eviscerating reviews.

And it hurt.

In my head I heard:  NOT  GOOD  ENOUGH.

I know that not everybody is going to love everything I do.  I want to be true to the characters, and the action.  But what I consider true to them is based on how I see them--and I do not see them the same way as other people do.  Cathy has been involved in writing the series from the beginning, but she sees the characters very differently than I.  There are characters I love that she just doesn't, and characters she loves that I don't.  We see how the characters interact differently.  If someone that close to the series can have a completely different viewpoint, a reader obviously can.

It reminds me of the scene in COLD DAYS by Jim Butcher where Mab is talking to Harry, describing how she see's his relationship with Molly.  He's faced with a perspective that is both uniquely Mab(ish) and utterly foreign to his own--BUT IS VALID FROM HER POINT OF VIEW.

I am not going to quit writing.  I love it.  It is not just what I do, it is who I am.  I also need the money.  And there are other readers who didn't write reviews, or who wrote the good ones.  I will write for them.  I am sorry that I lost the reader, and that I made her so very angry, but I am going to continue. And I will be forced to make choices--some of which will probably offend and anger other readers.  It is part of the risk you take when you put art out there.  I am not a fan of Hieronymus Bosch.  His stuff creeps me out.  It's well done, but I don't want it hanging on my wall, or above my desk (which just amused the heck out of an employer of mine, who knew I was a former art major and had a signed, limited edition print).  I can admit it is brilliant and still not want one close.

I love books.  I have many favorite authors.  But I am more likely to read Charlaine Harris or Jim Butcher than I am Nathaniel Hawthorne or any of the classics.  I think that Neil Gaiman is brilliant, but I know I will never be able to write the kind of literature he does.  My head doesn't go there.  Sometimes I'm a little jealous about that.  I don't know if I will ever be as popular as any of my favorite authors.  I would like to be, but I don't know if I have "it."  The lightning strike combination of work, talent, character, and popular taste/timing that launches you from the trenches out into the stratosphere.  I want to believe it's possible.  I WANT to.  But I can't know.  Only time will tell.  Time, and hard work, and sticking with it.  Which means I have to ignore the critics, and ignore the voice in my head that is so brutal and critical.

Which is why I read the blogs of people like Neil Gaiman, Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris.  Even if blogs are passe.  Because it encourages me, makes me believe that it may be possible.  And because, sometimes, I find a gem, like the Amanda Palmer interview--something that makes me think, and maybe makes me cry.

And where have YOU been young lady!

Hi!

Okay, I turned in the first edit pass on TO DANCE WITH THE DEVIL.  The changes weren't bad, but they were pervasive, and it took some time.  But it will be a better book because of them.

I'm taking tonight off, then back to the first book of the new series:  THE EXILE.  Now that I've had a little time to distance myself from it, I'm hoping to see what it needs more clearly.

Hope all has been well well y'all.

Later.

It Never Rains But it Pours

Okay, I'm getting over the flu.  Classic influenza.  BUMMER.  While I am down for the count, life has gotten BUSY.

1 - NEEEEEEEEED to do the polish on the Fae draft so I can get it to the beta readers.
2 - Received the edits for TO DANCE WITH THE DEVIL.
3 - Need to do all of the Blogs & Promo stuff for the release of ELDRITCH at the end of the month which (since I've lost most of a week) is coming up EVER SO rapidly.

And of course, since I've been unable to do anything productive around the house it's a pit that desperately needs attention.  And there's laundry, etc.

UGH.

Life can be a pain in the patootie.

But you know what?

I'm glad.

Because if I wasn't having an active writing career (which is, after all, my dream) I wouldn't HAVE to polish a manuscript, or make edits, or do a blog tour or promo stuff.

I am so freaking lucky.

Sometimes I just have to remind myself of that.

Have a great day folks.

THE DRAFT IS DONE!!! & I HAVE AUTHOR COPIES OF ELDRITCH

The first draft of The Exile (Book 1 of the Fae) is done.  I am POOPED.  But I am very happy--and weirdly sad.  I had to kill some of my favorite characters in the battle.  It's very hard to lose a character that you truly care about.  But sometimes they have to sacrifice themselves for the good of the story.  I truly believe that if a noble person would do it in real life, and the character is a noble person, the character should do it.  I also believe that if there is no chance of loss in a book, there is no conflict.

But oh it is hard sometimes.  I don't sacrifice them easily or well, but I won't ever guarantee that a character is safe.

Starting Monday I will begin the polish--second pass.  It generally goes very quickly.  I should be able to send the draft to the beta readers at the end of the week.  Hope they read fast!  The deadline to the editor is 2/15.  Still, it's good to know that I'm actually running on schedule.

My author copies of THE ELDRITCH CONSPIRACY in the Blood Singer series came.  VERY cool to see another book come out.  I'm really looking forward to the launch.  It got delayed a little, so I've had some extra anticipation time.

Best to everyone.  Be well, be happy.

Hi Guys! Happy Holidays

Okay, I'm BACK!

Christmas was an adventure.  I got to visit with my family --went to Illinois to see my Mom, so did my sister and her husband (my brother lives there with his whole clan), and my son flew out too.  Wonderful!  But heading back my flights were canceled, and I had to wait at the airport for hours to find that out.  Then a day and a half later I got to fly back.

Typical conversation:

"Will your boss be upset?"
"No clue.  But hey, not much I can do about it.  Even if he fires me . . . I can't exactly walk down to Texas."
"Fair enough."

Fortunately, the boss wasn't upset.  He understands that there are things in life you have no control over.  The weather and the airlines are among them.

ANYWAY, because of the delay, I am behind on ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.  But I'm glad to be home. The critters are glad to have me home.  And all will eventually be well -- probably in time to start the new year.

Hope you all had a great holiday.

Best.

Household Stuff Today

I have a million things to do.  I don't feel much like doing any of them.  But I will do them anyway.  And while I do I may blast the Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas albums.  Then maybe transition into Doo Wop or Heavy metal (BIG fan of 80s hair metal).

And by the time it's done the house will be clean, stuff will be done, and maybe I'll be in a better mood.

I'm sorry I've been such a bummer lately.  I'm working on fixing what's wrong.  A lot of it is external--things I have no control over.  But I can control how I react to it.  And that is something I need to work on.

Best.

REMINDERS OF GOOD THINGS

In an effort of good cheer and in nowhere near particular order:

1)  The auction went well.

2)  I'm getting over the crud.

3)  I have a book coming out in January.

4)  I have a brand new series I'm working on.

5)  I have both a day job and a writing career that support me and my critters.

6)  I have a terrific son I love who loves me.

7)  I have a terrific rest of my family whom I love and who also love me.

8)  I have friends.  Good ones.  Lots of 'em.

9)  My truck is paid for and still runs well.

10)  I own my house (in conjunction with the bank, but I'm working on that.)

Thanks God.  Really.

Getting Better

Okay, I've been pushing myself pretty hard.  There are reasons.  But then, there always are.  Unfortunately, the Wednesday before the holiday I caught a bug.  So, I've spent most of the holiday weekend sleeping and taking decongestants.  The good news -- the decongestants work.  The bad news, they make me depressed.  I know it.  I am trying to ignore it.  It will pass.  And I need to take the decongestants because I DO NOT NEED another case of bronchitis or pneumonia.  I already have scarring on my lungs from previous cases.

I will be fine.  It will be fine.  Eventually I will get everything done that I need to.  But I really didn't want to spend the holiday weekend feeling like crap.  Seriously, what a nuisance!

Hope you all had a happy and HEALTHY Thanksgiving.

Best always.

CHARITY AUCTION

I mean well.  I do.

I try very hard.

SOMETIMES it works.

Sometimes, less so.

I have now been up since 2:30 making sure that there are blurbs and photos for all of the charity auction items that we want to post.  This after having had TDFH (The day from HECK) yesterday that ended with me not being able to get the FLIPPING SITE working because of various EBAY related headaches.

But today is another day.  All blurbs are written.  Photos are available for all items that have actually been received (still missing stuff from one author, but it will get here eventually).  Promo has been lined up.

It will be fine.

I'm SO FRIGGING POOPED.

Anyway, I'll post the link when it's available.  I'll send the link.  I'll try my best to make this a success.  But then I AM SO FREAKING DONE.

CHARITY AUCTION

WOO HOO!

This evening the charity auction will go up.  I'm excited, happy, and hope that it makes lots of money for the charities.  Lots of busy, busy people have helped me out on this!  But I have to say, authors are good and generally generous types (oh, there are a few exceptions, but only a few).

It is time for me to knuckle down and work on the Fey book.  I'm excited and NERVOUS.  Starting a new series is always a bit of a roller coaster ride emotionally.  Hard work, laced with "Will they like it?" nerves.

Anyway, off I go to DO that voodoo that I do.

TWO MINUTES TO MONDAY

Okay, I have a whopping two minutes until I have to get down to the day job.

First, I went onto Ebay.  It appears that it is going to be EASY to do the charity auction.  WHOOO  HOOOO!!!! WOOT WOOT WOOT!!

That is a huge relief.

I completely revamped the personal website.  I LOVE it with a couple of quibbles.  I will work on those tonight.

AND NOW MY 2 MINUTES ARE UP.

Have a great day!

Charity/Trying to Help/Oh CRAP WHAT HAVE I DONE!

Okay, I am quite moved by the Sandy disaster.

So I tried to do something nice.  I contacted a few of my author friends and suggested that we each contact our fan base and have a contest where they donate to charity and we provide one winner with a prize.

WELL IT MORPHED.  It GREW.  And it become something bigger and HOPEFULLY much better.

There is going to be an e-bay auction with proceeds going to charity (The Red Cross and an animal rescue charity that has been active in the disaster).

MAJOR AUTHORS have contributed and are being hugely nice.  EVERYBODY is being hugely nice.  But I'm trying to organize this thing that I've never done before and have a big bad case of the OH SHIT WHAT'VE I DONE?S.

I will get this done.  I will get through this.  A friend's assistant has offered to help.  It will be fine.  BUT OH SHIT WHAT'VE I DONE?!

I have autographed books from some NYT bestsellers I'm going to donate (so that they can participate if they're on the road and can't be reached in time).  Other NYT bestsellers are putting together baskets and signing books.  There will be items signed by (in no particular order):

Cat Adams and C.T. Adams (DUH)
Shannon Butcher
Jim Butcher
Jade Lee
Kathy Lyons
Linnea Sinclair
Brenda Novak
Rachel Caine
Carole Nelson Douglas
Deeanne Gist

And probably more.  Some people haven't had a chance to get back to me.

In other words.  It's gotten huge.  Which is exciting, and terrifying if I screw it up.

So I won't.  I just WONT.

So there.

Happy Birthday Mom

Today is my Mom's birthday.  I will call her later and wish her a happy one.  I love her very much.

A part of me is considering wearing something funky to work, but it's a pretty conservative place, so I probably won't.  Sigh.

Depression is a very insidious thing.  It sneaks up on you, putting you to sleep, keeping you immobile, until you've lost touch with everything and don't even much care.  Life keeps moving on irregardless.

I am trying hard to get back on track.  But I run out of energy and give-a-damn pretty quickly.

Still, I have to keep moving.

So I will.

I have much to be grateful for.

And I want to thank God that the devastation from hurricane Sandy wasn't worse.  Oh, it's terrible.  Don't get me wrong.  The pictures are humbling and hard to wrap your head around.  But it could have been so much worse.  Think back to the times when we didn't have the kind of technology to warn us that this sort of disaster was on the way, and that it really was that bad, so that people had warning to evacuate out of the storm's path.  How many more lives would have been lost?

I am so sorry for those families who lost members.  I am sorry for the people who died--for the animals who died.  (I do wonder about the zoos.  How did the animals there fare?)  Life will change for everyone in the areas devastated by the storm.  That is a hard fact we learned from Katrina and other major hurricanes.

But people are strong.  They will rebuild.  And other people, whose lives weren't shattered, will help.  It's what we do.

Praying

I pray.  A lot.

Tonight I'm praying for a number of things.  But among them are the people and animals in the path of what is probably going to be a horrific hurricane.  For my country, which is in the process of an election where I truly would rather vote "None of the above" for opposite reasons, and for which I am seriously worried on many many fronts.

I am praying for guidance, because I feel quite lost.

And I am saying thank you, because despite all of the above, I do appreciate that my life is far, far better than so much of the rest of the world.

Gratitude is important.

Venality vs. Banality

Hi!

Had a REALLY rough week at the day job last week.  Spent the weekend recovering.  I bake when I am stressed.  On Sunday I made:  Chocolate cupcakes; carrot cake cupcakes; a casserole, and fresh bread (by hand, the breadmaker died and the replacement was crushed in delivery).  All are in the freezer to be doled out so that I don't go completely carb crazy over the next little bit.

I am thus feeling much better.

Of course I am also fretting a bit.  I re-read the big knock-down fight scene in the book I turned in and it needs some revision.  UGH.  Contacted the editor, but she said wait until it's going through edits.  So I shall.  But I will fidget in the meantime hoping she likes the book as a whole.

In the meantime I started reading several fantasy works written in 3rd person.  My individual series coming up is a fantasy series, and the editor is hoping for third person.  (Not my favorite.  I can do it, but writing in 1st is MUCH more natural for me.)  I picked up the first 4 in a WILDLY popular series that is praised hugely by the critics, and pulled out my faithful classics from the storage boxes they were languishing in.

And I discovered something.

The new series is beautifully written, undeniably brilliant, compelling . . . and I really don't like it.  I can read it for a bit, then I have to put it down and look at something else.  But then it nags at me and I go back--but I can't keep reading because . . .

Why?

I mean, seriously!  I picked these books up because I wanted to read and study them to see what the guy did right.  So why can't I read them? But why can't I put them down?

My conclusion.  I can't put them down because they are beautifully written, brilliant, and the characters are compelling.

I can't keep reading it because they are also just incredibly venal, base, and really pretty disgusting.  Aside from the main characters nearly everyone in the book is just a hideous human being--power grubbing, manipulative, vicious.  Pick a vice, any vice, and it is brilliantly and meticulously portrayed.

YUCK.

Okay, I know that incest, rape, murder, infidelity, and the like are common.  Laws and religion wouldn't be necessary if people didn't do heinous things.  BUT EVERY FREAKING CHARACTER except the heroes?  Really?

Yes, there are those who help the heroes--but they are always serving their own agenda.

How depressing.

And the violence is staggering.  Yes, it is a barbarianesque set of cultures in a midieval-style world.  It's a dark setting.  I don't generally mind dark.  Hell, I've been accused of being pretty damned dark in my own writing. (Don't believe me?  Re-read Touch of Madness.)

I dislike the books pretty intensely.  And yet I am desperate to find out what FINALLY happens to the main leads.  (Other than the two that are already quite messily dead, and the one that has gone bug nuts mad.)

Brilliant.  The equivalent of book crack.  You know it's bad for you, but you can't stop.  When I read this stuff I am depressed.  But I can't seem to not read it.

I doubt myself, wondering if I will ever create anything that compelling, if my talent can stretch that far.  I love writing, and I want to be brilliant.  But I wanted to be a brilliant visual artist as well.  And I just flat didn't have the chops.  I have the eye.  I can SEE what needs to be there (in my head), I can see what works and doesn't (although I can't always explain why).  But I couldn't execute what I saw.  I simply wasn't good enough.  And while you can learn techniques and craftsmanship, hard work will only take you so far.  It is the difference between an average college hoops player and Michael Jordan at his prime.

Writing is the same.  You can practice your craft.  But ultimately there is an element that is pure talent.  That indefinable "magic." The author of the new series (and the authors of the older ones too) absolutely have it.

I hope I do.

TA FREAKING DAH!!!!!!

The taxes went out with checks BEFORE THE EXTENSION DEADLINE.  I am checking the post office tracking today, but they should have ARRIVED!

THEN, on top of that, THE BATHROOM SINK IS FIXED.  Yes, to anyone else this is not a big deal.  Nor was it a big deal two years ago or so when I had to work on it.  But last weekend it was the (DAH DAH DUM) Sink FROM HELL that would NOT be fixed.  I don't know why.  It just WOULD NOT work.

But today it went together on the first try-slick and easy.  Go figure.  But this is WONDERFUL because now (a) I don't have to worry about it; (b) I can use the bucket for other things; and (c) I have time to actually relax this weekend and can go see ARGOS.

YIPPEEEE!!!!

Just a Quick Moment

Spent the entire lunch hour running.  I'm feeling frazzled because of it.  BUT, the package to the IRS went.  (YAHOOO,  THEY ARE PAID!!!  IT IS *****DONE****!)  I AM going to get next year's filed by 4/15.  I do not want to deal with this crap ever again!

In other good news -- Got the French version of Blood Song  It is SO AWESOME to see the book in a foreign language.  WOOT!

Okay, gotta go.

Status of THINGS

Okay, let's see.

1.  The book went in.  For good or for ill.  We'll find out which when the editor gets back to me.

2.  The check arrived.  (Sings the Hallelujah Chorus briefly.  Stops when dog starts howling.)

3.  The check will be going right back out to the IRS (who seem to feel that I earn more money than I think I do, but who "Have what it takes to take what I've got.").  I console myself with the knowledge that I LIKE roads, and PBS, and bridges, and airport security, etc.  I think the military need to get paid.  (They should probably get paid more, really, but I figure most people like me, think that the IRS thinks they make more money than they think they do.)  So paying taxes goes to many things I think need to happen and (sadly) some that I really don't.  But taken as a whole they are a necessary evil and I will send the $.

4.  I have started on the next book.  It will be written in 3rd person rather than first at the editor's request.  It is a fantasy/urban fantasy, and is hopefully going to be quite a lot of fun.  I had a whole slew of it previously written (for the proposal) in first person, so a lot of time will be spent on the old pages changing I and my to Brianna, she, and her, etc.  But that should be much quicker than actually doing a first pass on those pages.

I am happy.  I am excited.  And I will be even happier and more excited when I'm not quite so pooped.

I am also reading fantasy books in 3rd person to get my head back into writing in that form as opposed to the more-traditional-for-urban-fantasy 1st person (which I actually prefer).

5.  I have to do a newsletter.  I believe we haven't done one since something like JULY.  (Um, oops.)  I have also fallen off of the map on my website, social media, etc. because I quite frankly had a book that needed to be written that was fighting me tooth and nail.

6.  Since so few people actually commented on the previous post, all of those (5) who did will EVENTUALLY get a set of the audiobooks mailed out.  SO, if you're here again, please e-mail your snail mail address again with REALLY, AGAIN in the Re to cieadams@yahoo.com.  If not it will take longer because I have like a million and one e-mails that came in when I was avoiding the computer and I now have to weed through them all.  (UGH!)

Okay, off I go to do those things that need to be done.  Be well, be happy.  Keep reading.

Sunday, September 30, 2012

The book will go in Monday.

The Celia book-after-next (the next is THE ELDRITCH CONSPIRACY) is in the can.  Cathy is going over it.  She may make changes.   But come Monday it is off to the editor.

I am SO FREAKING POOPED.

It is tenatively titled DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, which I think is perfect.  Unfortunately back in 2003 Sherrilyn Kenyon had a book with the same title and there are several others as well.  Of course most are a few years old, so maybe they'll let me use it anyway.  We'll see.

I am behind on absolutely EVERYTHING but there are a couple of personal items that have reached CRISIS status while I was wrapped up in meeting the deadline.  Today and tomorrow they HAVE TO BE SOLVED or there will be nasty consequences, so I am keeping this brief.

But I am happy.  It's done.  I think it's quite good.  (A little short, but that's fixable.)

Anyway, I am off to deal with the crisis.  After which I will rest a few days and then try to catch up on things like newsletters, prize mail-outs, and the next thing.

No rest for the weary (I don't think I qualify for wicked right now.  I'm too busy to be bad.).

Be well, be happy.

A Contest, Contemplation, and stuff.

First, I want to see if anyone is paying attention.

SO, a contest.  If you read this, comment (and send a return e-mail address sent to cieadams@yahoo.com with COMMENT in the re).  Assuming I get more than one entry, I will randomly select somebody to get the first 4 Bloodsinger books on audio, e-mail you that you've won, and get a snail mail address to send them to.  Good Luck.

Second, something happened today that made me laugh.

When I was in 5th grade my mother was getting rid of a hat.  I took it.  It was a big, floppy tan felt hat with a brown vinyl/pleather band around the crown. (Yeah, I know, I should look up the right word, but I don't wanna, so there).  I sewed fake pearls every two inches along the band, and it became my "Hippie Hat."  I wore it everywhere.  They even took my picture for the newspaper in it.  (I believe my mother was mortified.  My friend was JEALOUS.)  At some point I wore it out, it fell apart, or became victim of a familial cleaning frenzy.  Either way, it disappeared before I made it to junior high.

TODAY HOWEVER I was looking at the Avon catalog.  Holy CRAPOLA BATMAN.  Page 104.  IT'S MY HAT.  Okay, it's got a ribbon around the band instead of pleather, but IT'S MY FREAKING HAT.

Needless to say, I bought it.  I suspect my mother will be mortified.

Puny

Took today off because I was exhausted and puny.  Not sick . . . yet.  But deep cough with wheeze and just complete and total exhaustion.

I got up to feed the animals at 6:00 (they're used to 4:30, so by 6:00 they were in the YOU WILL NOT IGNORE ME mode), took my meds and back to bed.

Had a short conversation with my sis at 9:00 or 10:00, did a couple of quick things and, back to bed.

Finally GOT UP at Noon.

Yup NOON.

And for the first time in longer than I can remember I actually wasn't completely weary.  Since then I have done a bit of housework, but mostly I ran up to the nearest city and went to the Walgreens, the bookstore, and bought myself seafood at Long John Silver's.  I fed the critters on the evening shift and am now messing around.

It is glorious.

I don't take many days off.  I have the full time day job, the full-time writing, a house to tend to, and animals.  But every once in a while I need to remember to rest.

Up Early. Working Hard.

Up early.  Working hard.  It's worth it, but I do get tired.

The dog, however, is tired of waiting.  She wants her walk.  NOW.  Never mind that it's still dark and I'm busy.  NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

I am not that person anymore.

Life changes and we change with it.

Seems obvious.

What's less obvious is that, because we're along for the ride, we generally don't notice how much we've changed or how.

I have been looking back, and forward, and at where I am now, trying to figure out a path to where I want to be and who I want to be.  In doing so, I've actually looked at how much I've changed since I was a teenager.

HOLY CRAP.

Oh, there are a lot of things that are still 'me'.  But huge swaths of my personality from then just don't apply any more.  The situations don't arise.  (Possibly because I've become old enough not to put myself in them.)

It's very strange.  Not bad.  But strange.

If I live long enough, will who I am now be as inapplicable to the future me?

Another Early Morning

Another early morning writing away.  The book is actually progressing nicely, although I will say yet again that I HATE transition scenes.  I have to segue from where I'm at to the two big final scenes, giving relief for a brief second before ratcheting the tension up to the breaking point.

I've done it before.  I can do it again.  But damn it, it's HARD.

Of course if it wasn't, they wouldn't pay me to do this for a living they would hire a trained monkey.

Gotta go.  Pages to write and agonize over.

A quickie.

I am about to go feed the cats, rest for an hour, then attack the manuscript.  Before I do I wanted to take a minute to say hi and thank the folks who actually still check in on the blog once in a while.

A few thoughts.

First, I do not like politics.  Talking about them makes me queasy.
That said, I will risk nausea to state that I haven't got a clue what I'm going to do.

I do not like a number of Obama's extreme liberal policies;

I equally dislike the Republican extreme conservative policies -- particularly those relating to women, gays, and the lingering sense I have that they believe that in this land of opportunity (and yes, it still is) we all get equal opportunities (we most assuredly DON'T).  And that if you're poor, it's your own damned fault.

I really feel like "a plague on both of your houses."  But that won't select a President, or congressmen, or teach both sides of the aisle to "PLAY NICE DAMMIT."

Thank you Jim Butcher.

Okay, I am a professional writer.  I have close to 20 books under my belt and innumerable short stories.

But a few days back I "hit the wall."

"Hit the wall" is the phrase I use when the story that seemed to be going so well suddenly and abruptly stops.

"Oh crap."  I say at first.  "I'm on deadline.  This isn't good."
If it lasts a little longer, I say.  "Oh SHIT.  I'm on DEADLINE.  This is NOT GOOD."
If it lasts a little longer than that I panic, even though it has happened before and I know I will fix it.  Because it could take time and I DON'T HAVE ANY.

So I went to Jim Butcher's website and to his blog (LiveJournal).  And I re-read his writing advice for newbies.  Even though I am not a newbie, I sure needed advice.  And going through his posts I remembered some things I had forgotten, and learned some things I hadn't, and wound up with this wonderful flash of inspiration.

I KNEW WHAT TO DO!

Holy crapola Batman.  I can DO this.  And I am doing this.  Feverishly.  There is still hope of making the deadline.  (Sleep deprivation may become an issue, but that's another problem for another night).

SO THANK YOU JIM BUTCHER!!!!

New Purse

Got a new Laurel Burch (sp?) purse.  I'd done a favor for a friend, and this is the repayment.  Tres cool.  Bright colors and pussycats.  :)

Took today off to write.  It is progressing.  Slower than I would like, but still I am taking all the progress I can get.

Back to it.

Writing Status

At twelve pages thus far today.  Less than I wanted, but more than I had expected.  I still have several hours left too.  But I need to take a break in a few minutes to clear my head, feed the critters, and get myself excited again.  Inspiration makes writing much faster and easier.  Failing that, there's craft, practice and hard work.

I've done both.  But I actually have some inspiration today, and I don't want to lose it.

So, off I go.

Be well.  Be happy.

Status and Stuff

Small decisions consistently made = huge changes.

I did not gain this weight from one snack or meal.   I gained it as the result of small choices.  Eating the chocolate.  Not doing the exercises.  Yes the thyroid condition and the pituitary tumor mean I'm going to have a tendency to be heavy.  But only a tendency.  I knew about those conditions and made the decisions anyway.  And voila.

And that's just one (the most physically obvious) example.

The bad news.  I've made quite a few bad choices.

The good news.  Changing small things is really kind of easy if you take them one at a time.

SO time to take hold of the little decisions and make the big changes.

Best.

Goal Setting and Tony Robbins

A lot of people make fun of the Tony Robbins thing.  I'll admit he seems a bit over the top sometimes.  And whoo boy howdy, the thing where folks got burned on the coals recently.  Um, OOPS?  OW!  Oh OW!

But the fact is that whenever I am stuck, and depressed, and feel as if I'm getting nowhere, I pull out my Tony Robbins Personal Power II tapes or CDs and start the program.  It gets me motivated and moving again.  Maybe it doesn't work for everyone.  Maybe it's a little silly.  But it works for me, and since I'm the only one I'm trying to impress or get action out of, I've no reason NOT to.

SO, I've been stuck, and a little depressed.  So out with the CDs.  I am now getting ready to do some serious goal setting, then back to the writing.

Wish me well.

Holiday Weekend Fast Approaching

Welcome to another holiday.  Summer is officially closing.  Can't say I'll miss the triple digit heat (assuming it is on its gone).

Writing needs to be the priority this weekend, but there's loads of other stuff to get done too.

Finalized negotiations on the contract for the new series.  SO HAPPY!  BIG BIG BIG thanks to Lucienne Diver my great and wonderful agent and to Melissa Singer my editor at Tor and all of the other folks who make all of it possible.

I LOVE MY JOB.

That said, I HATE deadlines.  They stress me out more than they should.

ANYWAY,

Gotta run.  Life awaits.

Best.

Life is what it is

I am sitting here pondering life, the universe and everything.

Life can be wonderful.
It can also be a pain in the patootie.
Sometimes it's both.

I got to sleep in my own bed last night after a week of sleeping in the living room on whatever surface seemed most comfortable.  You see, the big pecan tree in the back yard died in last year's drought and suddenly began shedding branches that were approximately 9-12 inches in diameter (some bigger) in the yard and then tilting in the direction of the yard and house at an angle whose trajectory included my bedroom.

If that tree had fallen it would've squished me flat.

Needless to say, sleeping in the bed wasn't an option.  Getting the tree down was a priority.  But these things take time, money, and are always more trouble than you think they're going to be.  But it is gone.  Chopped down, hauled away, and there is this huge blank spot in the middle of the back yard.  BUT I CAN SLEEP IN MY BED and did.  For hours LOTS of glorious hours.

And I broke my glasses.  They got soldered together by the jeweler this morning, but I've been wearing the spares for about two weeks and not seeing as well.  Very annoying.

The driver's side door handle on my truck broke completely.  I now have to leave the window down and open it with the handle inside, or crawl across the seat to open it around the gear shift knob.  The truck is a 1995.  It is not that easy to get parts.  Of course it has now started raining after months of completely dry weather.  I am glad for the rain, but the truck handle seems to have had impeccable timing.

I think that my house may have gotten hit by lightning in last night's storm.  I am not certain, but various items that were plugged in are acting quite odd.  My cell phone that was on the charger is beeping and flashing at odd intervals for no apparent reason.  The breadmaker (yes, the breadmaker I was so ecstatic to have actually GOTTEN that worked and has provided much loved home made bread) is dead.  I am terrified of going into the office for fear that the new computer (that has my manuscript and all of my notes, and yes I KNOW I should have backed up more often, but I got busy and didn't OKAY.  MY Bad.  Got it) may be affected.

I am writing this at the office, because I was switching out the art work on my desk before heading out to buy a lottery ticket.

Now I am signing off to go buy the ticket, go home, and find out if I have a working computer and available book.  Wish me well.

Oddly Enough

Oddly enough, it seems as if generally when I'm totally weary and just about ready to give up, but decide to give it one last big push that I break through.  It's as if I need to PROVE my commitment over and over.  I WILL do this.  Fortunately, every time that this happens it reaffirms to me that there's a REASON I'm so blasted stubborn.

Life is hard.

It's good, it's beautiful, it's wonderful, and it goes by surprisingly fast.

But it is hard.

You're struggling to deal with the sleep schedule (NOT) of a newborn.
You're struggling to deal with medical bills, ear infections (Tubes?  Yes/No?) and teething.
You're struggling to deal with school supplies, bullying and Cub or Brownie projects.
You're struggling to deal with saving for college (oh SHIT I should've done this sooner), panic over driving (oh SHIT I have to give him/her the keys?) and insurance rates, and grades.
You're struggling to deal with the first heartbreak, not getting invited to the party/prom/whatever.
You're struggling to deal with them finding a job.
You're struggling to deal with college or first apartment and being gone.

And then you look up and HOLY SHIT 18-20 years have passed.  I was 23 last time I looked.  Now I'm 43?!!!  Where in the hell did all this weight come from?  I've got GRAY HAIRS?  HUNH?  But I just BLINKED.

I am incredibly proud of my adult son.  But I miss him.  I keep working at the day job, at the writing, taking care of the house and the animals, all the stuff of life, but I look up occasionally from having my nose pressed to that grindstone (gotta get it all DONE, gotta) and realize that even more years have rolled by.

My body is a workhorse.  I am very proud of what it's survived.  But it sure as hell doesn't look like a supermodel.  It creaks (I was going to say in the morning, but I'd be lying to us both) like the floorboards of an old house.  But it IS an old house.  It is the building that has housed my soul all these many years.  It gave me my son.  Gave me pleasure.  Endured pain.  But it is sagging and needs a bit of rehab, perhaps a coat of fresh paint.

I am okay with that.  I've earned every scar.

But I think that I am going to try from now on to look up from the grindstone a bit more often, to see the sunrise (Yeah, I get up that early) and the moonrise, listen to the birds (that the cats haven't gotten to).  Take a walk.  Go to a movie.

Yeah, the work needs to be done.  But it'll always be there.  It is a fact.  There is always more work.  It expands exponentially to fill every void.  If you don't take control of your time someone else will, and you won't be happy with the result.

So today I stopped to blog.  It was going to be about persistence and its value.  That's there.  It's valuable.  But somewhere along the way we hit a detour into general musings.  And that's okay too.  The happy man is the one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Enjoy the scenery.

Thursday.

Hope you had a happy 4th of July holiday.  Mine was wonderful--productive and restful at the same time.  Spent a lot of the day working on editing my separate website.  It was SO out of date, and I'm still not completely happy with the look of it.  But it is getting there.

Health is finally back to normal!  YAY!  About freaking time.

Pat Elrod's Kickstarter funded.  I'm so glad!  It makes me VERY happy.

No, there wasn't a visiting dignitary yesterday, what with the holiday and all.  But I'm trying to get back on track.  We'll see how that goes next week.

Now, if I'm going to continue catching up on things I have to go.

Have a great day!
